97 lumina with 3.1 transmission slipps only pulls in first gear

i have replaced the modulator valve it helped nothing i have already bought a new tranny filter kit gonna try that next the tranny fluid looks pretty nasty if that doesnt work got any ideas that can save a poor guy some money without a crooked garage ripping him off? lol please help if you can

you didn't mention if it only goes into first, won't shift to second, and has no reverse, if that's the case, the problem i had was what they call a stovepipe in the transmission,it links up second gear plates with the reverse drum, mine had sheared teeth on 1 end, but sadly, if that's the case, it means to take out tranny to repair
