Re: computer woes
Welcome to AF.
To answer your question in the simplest terms, this is not going to be an easy, straight forward swap. Now for a brief explanation. Your 95 is a crossover year. You need to check the emissions certification label under the hood (it's either on the radiator shroud or underside of the hood) and see if it is OBD-I or OBD-II. If it's OBD-I, then most if not all the sensors are going to have to be switched, as all 96 models are OBD-II. There are also possible major differences in both the 3100 and 3800 engines between 95-96. 95 was the last year GM used the VIN-L 3800, but they also used the VIN-K 3800 that year (the 8th digit of your VIN# denotes the engine, and will be an M,L or K depending on which engine you have). The 96 used the VIN-K 3800 exclusively, and the two are not even remotely interchangeable. As far as the 3100, there was a design change on that engine also. Some 95's had ball and socket rocker arms, and some had the roller rocker arms (although both are referred to as a VIN-M 3100). This is the easiest way to tell the two apart, but there are many other differences between the two that could make this swap impractical (bordering on impossible for a DIY).
