I know you guys have already heard about swapping 350 motors and vortec v8 into Jeeps, but I was wondering what would be the best way to get alittle bit better gas mileage in my jeep. It has the 2.5 so it is slow already, but I cannot seem to find anything. thanks

What mileage are you getting? I had a 97 2.5 and got 17mpg no matter where I went - highway slow, highway fast, on the beach in 4 Lo, it was 17mpg.

Well, I had to replaced the o2 sensors when I first got it and It rode alot better. I got about 15 mpg until the sensors went out again. I know that this is about average but I want to figure a way to get alittle better. Maybe gear it differently to run at a lower rpm.

Do you have larger tires on it? That would affect mpg. The 2.5 is pretty low on power, so you have to keep your foot into it to get it moving.

Air filter and tune up probably wouldn't hurt either. Have you tried synthetics everywhere (differentials, trans, transfer case, engine, power steering)? That's usually worth 1-2mpg also.

I have an '88 with the 4.2 6cyl carb. It only gets 15 mpg with 30 X9.5 r15 tires on it. I am also looking to get better mpg but don't even know where to begin. When I got it half of the exhaust and emmision parts were missing. replaced all and added a rebuilt carb and 15 mpg is the best I can get.

Consider that if the tires are larger than stock, your speedo could be off and indicating less miles that you are traveling, which would reduce mpg.

Also, running larger tires without a gear swap will decrease mpg since the engine is working harder.

A 1988 with the 4.2 and manual transmission is rated at 15 city and 20 highway. Auto is 14/16 so if you have an auto trans, you're in the ballpark.

depending wat you have. a cold air intake works and a throttle bodu spacer wouldnt be a bad idea. try the plugs and wires. i have a 95' 2.5 with 4 in lift and 33's. i had 15 in the highway in 4th gear because it wouldnt hold speed in the 5th. i put a throttle body spacer on it and now i get about 17 mpg on the highway because i can keep it in 5th and im not starving the engine. the spacer adds mid range torque at about 2k-3k which its reving at on the highway in 5th gear. depending on how much money you have and what you're looking for you can build anything you want. a cold air intake, throttle body spacer would help .
