Clearing up the Tach issues

I've found a lot of Tach clusters on ebay for around 100.00. I know it's a simple plug-n-play, but does it need to come from a 3 cyl. car if you have a 3 cyl? Ebay is not very specific. My 93 xfi is in desperate need of a tach and an oil pressure gauge. One thing I can't stand is a gauge cluster that doesn't tell you anything until it's too late. I'll mount the oil pressure gauge right on the dash.

Re: Clearing up the Tach issues

the 4 cyl tach will work on a 3 cyl but the tach wont read right since the signal from the engine is 4 pulses per revolution instead of 3. you can use a resistor to make it read right. think someone on teamswift posted a article on how to make it work

Re: Clearing up the Tach issues

I think i might have installed one of those 4 cyl. tachs in my car 3 cyl. Geo! It seems to read OK at idle (which baffles me), but at 62MPH in fifth it reads about 2450 R.P.M.From what I've read, I would suspect that it would be more like 3200 R.P.M. If the 4 cyl. tach reads 25% low, than I'm (unfortunately) in the ballpark. I would like to know how to modify it, but not sure if i want to go through "re-installing" it again!

Re: Clearing up the Tach issues

Make a thin paper template to tape over your Tach numbers that is correct!

You will have to know what the real numbers are to make the template, but
once done - there you are!

"Where ever you go - there you are!"
