Changing 96 Passat headlight bulbs. *Help Please*

Can anyone tell me how to change the headlight bulbs in a 96 Passat? All it says in my owners manual is "take to a dealer service shop". I imagine this is more expensive than it needs to be, so I would like to be able to replace myself. Thanks!!

Hello trish you need to open the black cover on the back side of the headlight housing which is accessed by opening the hood and they are on the left and right depending on which side you need to replace,then once you find the black covers you push a little tab on the end of the cover and pull the cover off and inside there is your headlight bulb which will have a wiring plug that you must press a tab on the headlight plug and to remove it,then proceed to turn the headlight bulb carefully in one direction which will release the bulb from the holder then you will be able to pull the bulb out.I will caution you to be carefull when handling the new headlight bulb as you cannot touch the glass potion of the bulb with your fingers or any dirty object which will make it dirty as this will cause a hot spot on the bulb and premature failure will happen.The new headlight bulb then you set it into the housing and turn it into the housing to seat it then plug it in and replace the cover.I hope this will help you .Thanks LARRY
