7.5 rear end swap?

Would a 7.5 10bolt from an Astro van bolt in my 89 Caprice? I'm just trying to figure out a rear end with coil spring and control arm set up with a lower gear ratio that could bolt in. I really don't need a 8.5 and there hard to find in salvage yards in my area (Cleveland OH) with a desirable gear ratio to make this worth doing. Looking for something in the 3.42 but rather a 3.73 ratio.

Re: 7.5 rear end swap?

Why not just change the gears, rather than swap out an entire rear axle assembly?

The answer to your question is no. The mounting locations are in different places, as well as not being the same width. You need to stick with B-body parts.

Re: 7.5 rear end swap?

In addition to all of that, the rear-end housing of an Astro van is offset to the right over an inch I think it is... The left axle is longer than then right.

Re: 7.5 rear end swap?

Too scared lol. I've never set up a ring and pinion before. I've done some research on it and I don't know if I really want to tackle that job. I'm waiting back on a phone call from a descent backyard mechanic that has done this work before for cheap prices. Money is a huge issue, my 2 oldest play hockey and soon my 3rd will be following them. For anybody that knows from experience, it's an expensive sport! For some reason the Astro popped in my mine, figured I just throw that out there. I had a thread about swapping out the guts from an S-10 or another lower geared 7.5. I'm just tossing options around. Thanks for the reply.
