No cam sensor in head???

I am looking at buying a GST spyder from a guy right now. The guy is apparently a complete idiot and knows little if anything about dsms (says its an evo1 "japanese" motor). He told me the car runs but will not stay running due to a missing "cam" sensor. I am currently trying to figure out if he means a "cas" sensor. I know in my 95 GSX there is no "cam" sensor inside of the head. Instead there is a "cas" sensor inside the motor. Although there is a sensor right behind the intake cam gear. Will a dsm even start w/o a "cam" sensor?

Re: No cam sensor in head???

With my CAS unplugged the car will fire up and run for about 1-2 seconds before cutting off. Mine is on the passenger side of the intake cam on sticking out of the valve cover. I think with the 95's they were on the drivers side of the valve cover.

Re: No cam sensor in head???

Yea they are. On 95s they are right behind the intake cam gear. The guy I'm talking to about buying this car is completely confused or just retarded. If I'm understanding him right... the CAS sensor is sticking out of the head on the pass side of the head and he never put the wiring harness in to connect it when he put the new motor in. I want to go check it out in person here very soon. If it looks like a good deal I may have a winter project on my hands.

Re: No cam sensor in head???

Uhh just make sure you don't plug the CAS in infront of him and fire it right up. I'm sure if that is the problem you wouldn't want to fix it before you paid for it

Re: No cam sensor in head???

Haha nah, I plan on going there checking it out. If that is the only thing visibly wrong with the car I'm going to stop by advanced auto and pick up the needed parts then show up with cash. After handing him the money I'll see if I can get it running and drive away. A mental kick in the balls. Hopefully that is the only thing wrong with it. I'm being anal about checking the car out though because the kid informs me:

"Oh dude I put a Japanese EVO1 motor in it. I got the wrong head because it doesn't have a cam sensor on it and I can't figure out how to fix it."

I'm thinking he put a head from a 95 on it and has no idea.

If you can, bring a compression tester with you. That would be the best way to see if he is an idiot or not!

He may just be lost in the sauce. It sounds like to me that he got a little in to deep on the build and had no idea what he was doing. Probably a first time DSM owner

Re: No cam sensor in head???

Yeah I planned on bringing my tester with me and a trailer. If that is the only thing wrong with the car I wasn't planning on being that much of a dick. He didn't tell me what year the car is. All I know from him so far is that:
1. GST Spyder 5spd
2. Apparently newly installed used motor
3. Head needs to be prepared/fixed for a CAS installation
4. Some of the interior is not installed
5. Has not been on the road for awhile now

He says he is moving come Decemeber and owes 2grand on it still. He says if i can give him that much he will be happy instead of just junking the car. He does not have the time nor money to fix the car. I've got a bad feeling though seeings how low the price is and the body pics look great. He claims the fact that the ignition is screwed up due to no CAS is the only problem. I'm planning on going to check the car out in person on this coming Wed.
