usually they end up being steel or gunmetal, but now I have some Alclad I will be experimenting with some different colors to see which gives the most realistic effect.....

jus regular foil will do, then sand it lightly with a flat file or sand paper to make that used look.

Air brush on some Gunze Iron metalizer, then rub it with a Q-tip.

Tamiya Flat Aluminium, then 50/50 black/thinner brushed over aluminium then removed before it dries(trust me, it does something, but I can't explain it) then sanded to make the used look.

Depends on the car, consult your references
![]() One technique I like to use for vented disks is to first spray the whole assembly gunmetal then drybrush silver over the top. Applying the drybrush in a circular motion, mimicking the abrasion of the pad on the disc. This leaves the vents the darker gunmetal and gives the raised surface a shiny 'worked' look. After that, I hand paint the hub and caliper details. Done

Sounds like a top technique. I've got to give it a try sometime.

For simulating carbon disc brakes, is it better to use gloss, semigloss or flat black? Or any other colour?

Just customising a model car, not making a replica of any particular car.

It depends on the car. If the brake discs aren't easily visible, I would just paint them with silver paint. If they are, I paint them with Silver pain then polish them.
If it is meant to be a old, used looking car, I don't polish them. It all depends on the model really. I am thinking of trying a chroming compound soon...
