840 computer display flakey

My 1995 840 has had the in-dash computer/display replaced 2 times because the display became intermittent (numerous vertical lines do not illuminate).

The first two times were under warranty. Now, the display is flakey again, and the car is out of warranty.

The dealership solution is to replace the unit. Is there a source for aftermarket repairs to this unit?

Anyone have any luck with do it yourself repairs to the display?

Thanks,
-t

Is it the pixels themselves on the OBC out or is it the whole display?

Just odd pix, not the whole display, and not all the time.

Sometimes, all the pix are ok, and at other times some will not light. I suspect temperature is a factor.

I also suspect that there is either a header connector or ribbon cable connector that is the culprit, but I have not yet tried to figure out how to get the OBC out of the dash so that I can have a look inside.

Is this OBC common to any other models?

All help appreciated. Thanks,
-t

Yes. I have the same problem with my 93 850Ci
The message is partially readable.

I think our best bet is to buy new unit. I mean used.

If you do get a new MID, write to BMW NA and ask for a refund, they will probably reimburse you. They did this for me and several other guys I know.
