exhaust silencer

Can someone briefly explain to me what the silencer dose on a muffler?

Dose it function like its name? A silencer? Dose it completely muffles the sound or just surpress it a little?

Dose it sound crappy with a silencer on or dose it sound okay? (guess I'm looking for opinions)

Thanx.

personally I think that putting on the silencer makes the muffler sound like s***. Besides putting on the silencer kills the performance use of the exhaust. But it is a good choice if you only like the exhaust noise once inawhile or want the look.

i had a silencer type muffler on my old car and it was a pretty cool option just becuase you could lessen the noise of the exaust when it would start to get annoying. as much as you love the noise level of the exaust when your with your girl you wanna be able to have some type of conversation with her. it doesn't really make much noise when its on. probably the only thing you hear is the intake depending if you have one on. but it does have its up just because its wheather you want to have it quiet one day and loud the next. i say its worth it, but then sometimes you dont want it.

I put a potato in my stillin muffler and drilled a hole in it and it muffled the sound real good, This really helps when the police roll right by you and don't even look your way. You have to replace it every week for some reason though

with all the heat coming out of the exhaust, you should grab some sour cream and chives and eat that potato when you replace it!

Thanx for the reply guys. I figured the only way to find out if we would like it is to put one on. So I baught a Megan Apexi N1 on e-bay and had it installed. It sounds great, the exhaust is installed on my girl's 02' Civic, LX. The engine sounded louder at low RPMs and gave a soft purr at higher RPMs; without the silencer. With the silencer on, it was extremely quiet.

That's also some info for anyone that might be interested in getting one!

The potato with sour cream and chives sounds pretty good... feeeling hungry for some reason?!?
