In a general sense, they connect the tire to the car.

The LCAs in Hondas attach at one end to the body of the car and to the hub (where the tire attaches) on the other. About 8" behind the tire is where the spring/shock assembly attaches. So as the car hits bumps, they act as a pivot point. There is also another assembly in front of the tire that i cant show in my picture, but it is effectively the same thing as the LCA just running 90 degrees from the one pictured
