97 Corolla - Starting/Electrical Issue?

1997 Corolla with 87k miles on it. Several days ago it began to have trouble starting....it also "chugged" a bit.

2 days ago the vehicle started slugishly, sputtered along at idle and smoke rose from under the hood. The car was shut off and continued to "diesel" for 30 seconds or so before dying (This was told to me by a third party, I do not drive this vehicle). The claim was the smoke smelled like burnt rubber...

The vehicle does not start at all now. I'm going to take a look at it this afternoon, it sounds to me like it could be a burnt coil? Any input from fellow Toyota owners/mechanics would be appreciated! Thank you in advance.
