Gauge Cluster

Can having your computer updated, steering box replaced, purge solenoid on evap, and intermediate steering shaft replaced some how cause the cluster to all of a sudden stop working? It was working fine before and now the speedo works when it feels like it. Dealer said doing the work in no way affected the cluster, but reputable mechanic friend of a friend says that's bs. Any thoughts? 04 Z71 w/5.3 and 78,000miles btw.

Re: Gauge Cluster

I dont think doing work on the truck will mess up the cluster, If you do a search you will find that GM really fudged up with their clusters, your lucky you got 78k out of yours.

Its kind of sad, speedometers have been pretty standard on cars for some time now...seems GM would have it down pat by now...$400 at the dealership, or $100 for some dude on Ebay to fix it, or $100 for an aftermarket.

My speedo and volt gauge is broke completely, and every couple of weeks or so my tach will decide to break, but it has always fixed itself, If my oil gauge, gas gauge or tach breaks I will get a aftermarket one.

Re: Gauge Cluster

Your cluster just finally gave up... mine was acting up for about 4 months before it got stuck at 120mph. I just got a letter a couple weeks ago, but about 6 months too late for me about GM acknowledging cluster problems... Call your GM dealer see if your vehicle is coverered for repair. Mine was but I bought a new one so Im fighting over getting my money back for that.

Re: Gauge Cluster

I installed a new wheel hub because the old one was so rusted around the sensor that the sensor was giving the computer low readings and causing the ABS to come on under 10MPH. Then I got a Tech Bulletin saying that Chevy was testing and replacing the sensors no matter what the mileage was. I called Chevy Customer Assistance at 800-222-1020 and sent them the receipt for the hub and they sent me a check. How nice! Maybe you can do the same with your cluster.

Re: Gauge Cluster

good luck with getting them to replace or repair like the bulletin says(gmp07-174). I replaced the one in my 03 hd ,and the one in the wifes 03 z71 has made a noise since we bought it. they were both documented as having a problem when they where well within the original warrenty, but they said no to the z71.because it has not been replaced and now has 70,098 miles. they might reimburse me for mine since it was replaced at 59,000. this just isnt right to say hey we have a problem we will fix it, then say nope sorry to late.

Re: Gauge Cluster

I replaced my stock cluster in my 02 3500 8.1 with an Escalade version same year, speedo goes up to 120mph, has trans temp, everything worked just fine with no recalibration of any sort, plus I installed green LEDs in it, got it on Ebay a couple of years ago for under a hundred bucks I have another of the same that I have a project of installing digital gauges into., you can also ask to have one preprogrammed the same as your old odometer, a baby can almost swap it out.
