2000 Blazer Transmission Problem

Ok, so im pretty sure after reading through the postings that i have a broken sunshell in my 2000 blazer. It is an auto with a 4.3.

The other day when i put it into reverse i heard a clank and now i have no reverse and it wants to wind out 1st unless i get off the gas for a sec.

The problem is, is i got estimates and they are all around the $1500 mark and i want to try to do it myself.

I have rebuilt engines before but never a tranny.... Is this something that is doable?.. and will i need special tools?...

Also i called about a rebuild kit and was told it runs about $85 and the sunshell being $35. Is there anything else that i should look at while i have it apart? I remember the mechanic saying somthing about replacing some solenoids or something because of metal chips possibly messing them up.

1500 is a good price if it is rebuilt right.
The days of just throwing a kit in a transmission is long gone.

To rebuild or repair a transmission right it takes a lot more than a clutch and seal kit.
Converter and front pump and clutch drums sprags and bushings and planetary gears/bushings and washers and trans solenoids and wiring to name a few.
The hard parts you may need and special tools may need can run you over the 1500 mark.
Also it takes quite a few of special tools on the clutch pack seals and plastic sealing rings and bushings and pump alignment.
If you figure the hard parts and special tools that you would need to do it right yourself.
For a one time job it might be better to just get a rebuilt one.

The factory GM rebuilt transmissions parts and labor warranty is being upped
To over 3 year 50k or 75k to 100k.
