Transmission Shift Solenoid Replacement

Hi
I would be grateful for some information about the complexity of replacing a shift solenoid in my 3.0l '96 Aerostar.

It has shown a trouble code PO761 for the last 30,000 miles. There is no problem with the transmission except that it won't get 4th gear.

I want to know if I could replace the solenoid with the trans. in place? How much disassembly is required? Are any special tools needed? And would it be too difficult for an average shade tree mechanic?

I will not pass the emissions test unless I fix this problem and local Trans. repair shops have quoted $680 and up for the work.

Thanks
