Is street racing and tricking out your car stupid

I was reading a thread when I came acrossed a reply that claimed that street racing was stupid and irresponsible and hooking up you car was a complete waste of money. Does this sound familiar hobie kopek. I do not believe it is. Street racing is a fun way to releave that weekly stress on a friday or saturday night. There is nothing better feeling than the adrenaline running through your body after a race, and no better way to show off the fruits of your labor than with a phat intercooler in the grill, premium sound system and so head turnning decals. So who's with me and who's against. Hobie I already know your answer, but you can still vote if you wish. BE SURE TO VOTE

First off, street racing IS stupid and irresponsible and I absolutely defy you to prove otherwise. If you can tell me how it DOES NOT theoretically and actually increase the chances of accidents and fatal accidents then I'll pay for your trip to law school.

I PERSONALLY think even the phrase tricking out is stupid. I also think this thread is petty, accusative and useless. I think there's a world of difference between tuning a car and "tricking it out". I'm a fan of the former.

I'll double check the thread, but I don't think you read it right. You did an amazing job of taking it to heat however.

I've driven a boosted Lancer and I know of more than a handful. None of the cars are complete, but the one I drove was quick running only 6psi. Road Race's little project car (owned by an individual outside of RRM) though still not dynoed claims results equal to GS-T's also running only 5 or 6 psi. These claims are hardly outrageous too.

High boost is a bad idea at this point because our con rods are so long they'd likely snap above 9 psi or so, but turbocharging is certain a viable option for those who really want to get some speed out of their Lancer. We do have forged pistons available through RRM though so that's one less weak link to worry about. Once they make con rods, pins and (hopefully) a decompression gasket high boost will be less of an issue. Your car won't be an Evo (don't even get me started), but it will be significantly faster and it's the only way you're likely to squeeze any real power out of the car.

Personally I think street racing is stupid. Plain aind simple it's irresponsible and dangerous. The bottom line remains the same though. If you want your econo car to be fast it's going to cost you. Look to spend upwards of $3,000 for a kit and near $4,000 for an intercooled kit. If you know what you're doing a good custom job should cost about half as much if not less. I wouldn't advise any of this for an inexperienced driver or tuner. Boosting a FWD car creates serious torque steer and without an LSD you'll have traction issues launching and probably even in daily driving. At any rate...good luck.
That it? If so you may want to read it again.

Street racing is definitely not the brightest thing in the world. Take it to a track. Hell, join SCCA and maybe win an award if the fruits of your labor and your skill to actually get your machine around several corners are that good. I'm not going to preach against it since it has and always will be around.

I agree with you Hobie. Street racing does increase the likely hood of having an accident by you increase the chances just as much when you do 5 or 10 miles over the speed lilmit. If you are racing on a closed road where is the irresponsibility. If teh road is closed that means there aren't any stray cars around. Now I don't know if thats how it's done every where, but that is how we do here (on occusion). If you race on a busy highway or city street yeah that's stupid but I still think that racers are smart enough not to race on a busy street. In a nut shell street racing doesn't put you in any more risk than your daily drive to work or school.

racing vs. "tricking" ( ??? )

Personally, I think street racing is stupid. I am a divorced dad with two kids and I don't ever want to get run into by some young punk showing off. However, I think modifying your car is very cool. You can make it an extention of your personality ( say mild and cool like mine ) or what no one expects you to be ( wild and bold ). Your car can look like what ever you want it to, however much $$ you are willing to spend.
