police lights in models

im sure some of you have seen models with working front and rear lighting, but have you seen model police cars with flashing leds? these cars are awesome IMO, and i am a builder of model police cars. I would love to know how to install lighting in my models, and if anyone has any help on how to please teach me!

here is a link to a custom police car i found on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ksid=p3907.m29

Re: police lights in models

First off, that model was flipping awesome! I feel for the builder as that is a lot of work. But, it is already to $150. He might make off well.

I have looked into lighting a few times and when I first wanted to try it I was interested in doing the light scanner from KITT in night Rider. I found this: http://www.talkingelectronics.com/pr...ScannerP1.html. I can't say that it would help, but a simple diagram like this could be re-worked I would think. Hope it kind of helps.

Edit: I know LEDS will work for larger scales. I think you can get Micro Leds now as well. I would look into Micro Red/Blue Leds. I doubt Radio Shack might have the micros, but I have bought regular ones there. You can also buy generic cicruit boards and cut your own circuits. I have etched boards before and if you have the chemicals it is super easy to do.

Edit #2: Here ya go! http://www.customdynamics.com/micro_magic_leds.htm

Re: police lights in models

Chimneyville makes a wiring kit for emergency vehicles. It includes the circuit and some LEDs, will take some wiring but the hard part (the circuit) seems to be done for you. It doesn't look at all as complex as the car in the eBay auction, but would be a good start, I would imagine.

I do not have any direct experience with this kit, but I have dealt with Chimneyville before and they are a good company (it was years ago, so I'd email them first to be on the safe side; a lot of people have been burned by websites that are up for companies that are no longer around).

Re: police lights in models

Just looked at the vid and all I can say is WOW. But if you are thinking of doing this to a 1/24, be careful as the circut board may not have enough room inside the car, even if you did you would have to make it curbside. I remember a thread here where the author, can't remember which, used a display stand to hide the batteries etc, for under car neons.

Re: police lights in models

thanks for all the replys guys. I had purchased the chimneyville kit, and the directions provided in the kit were confusing, plus i had 0 experience with soldering and circuits. I was only able to get 2 of the 6 lights to flash , but i think i will breakdown and purchase another one to try again.

You can try policecarmodels.com also, you may find what you need in the lightbars/accesories section in 1/24 scale. I don't know who makes those kits but don't be afraid to contact with the shop owner: I just did the other day and they were really helpful! Give it a shot!

Re: police lights in models

I actually just saw these on Hobby Search the other day. Seems geared towards Japanese police cars:
