1992 C-1500 4x4 5.7L Tranny?
Just bought a very good running 1992 Cheyenne tonight. Was shocked at how well it drove down the road! It is going to be a snowplowing truck and laready has a 7.5 meyer plow installed. The truck is a base model cheyenne 4x4 work truck with a 350 and the 4 speed auto tranny. From the looks and drive oof the truck it has had lots of maintenance and has definately had the front end completly redone. well over 100K and the truck drives down the hwy at 75 MPH with a big heavy plow straight as an arrow and has not even a single rattle and nary a shake. Lots of power as well so I'm assuming that the motor has been redone at one time in its life. The brakes are perfect the AC blows cold and the 4 wheel drive works great. I got a good buy on the truck and I'm extremely pleased with its on road manners....There is one thing that concerns me though as the stock trannies are known to be the achilles heel per se on these vehicles correct?
This truck is not going to be a daily driver. I have a new 2007 for that. this truck is more of a hobby plow truck as I have a small strip mall and apartment complex to plow this winter. Primarily the truck will sit in my driveway until it snows then it will plow for a few hours and return to its driveway. I'm thinking about upgrading the tranny as the rest of the truck is just so nice. I didnt think I would like the truck this much and I'm taken aback by how solid it is for what I paid. This leaves me with some extra cash to put into the vehicle and I'm thinking that upgrading the transmission to the HD unit or maybe one of the old school 350/ 400's if they will fit? The truck is a 1992 C-1500 with 4x4, AC and as I said it is to be a dedicated plowing rig. What is my best bet on upgrading the tranny in this vehicle? Welcome to AF.
To go to a different transmission you would have to change the transfer case and drive shafts and crossmember. A lot of changing and expense. A good old 400 transmission would a good transmission. But again a lot of changing and expense. I would have a good repair shop check out the transmission that is in it. A good old filter and pan drop may be all it needs. A dealer factory rebuilt can be had for around 2K WITH A VERY GOOD WARRANTY ON IT. Some have been upped to to 5 years or 100K parts and labor. Or a good transmission repair shop can rebuilt and update it to HD. Good Luck MT
