Pulling front hub

I need to replace the driver's side CV shaft on a 99 Malibu. All of the pullers I've tried to get on the hub are either too narrow or too shallow to get the puller on far enough to get enough threads to pull on. I've tried the ones that AutoZone and AdvanceAuto (don't remember the brands) 'rent.' Anybody know of a particular brand that works on these car hubs?

Usually if I am replacing a hub that is stuck into the knuckle I will use a slide hammer that is held on the wheel studs by the lugnuts. After I take out the bolts that hold it in of course. But if I am replacing a front wheel drive CV shaft here is what I do: Take off the wheel. Remove the big spindle nut. Pop the lower ball joint loose and the outer tie rod. This will allow you to pull the strut/steering knuckle, with brakes and rotor still attached, out away from the car and the hub should slide off of the splined end of the CV shaft. If the splines seem to be rusted into the hub I will use an air hammer with a pointed bit to beat it out. A big hammer and punch should work too. Hit in the center of the shaft so you don't damage the threads. If you are replacing the shaft then it doesn't matter. Once the end is out of the hub pop the other end out of the tranny and throw the new one in. With a lift and air tools, takes about half an hour.
