A/C Compressor Replacement

So, I think the bearings are going out on my A/C unit, so I will probably replace it. Its making a high-pitched squeal at idle up to 2K rpms. Its not constant and happens randomly at start-ups and while sitting at lights and stuff. I just replaced the alt because I thought it was coming from that, but its not.
So, anyone know of an easy way to go about replacing it? Its a 94 Z28. I hope to do it this afternoon. Any help would be nice.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement

You sure it's not the water pump? Otherwise you don't need to replace the whole compressor because unless the A/C is on, only the pulley itself is "spinning" freewheeling acutally like a ikdler pulley and would continue to make noise.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement

So, I would just need to replace the bearing? It makes the noise when the AC isn't on.

to pin point where noise is coming from.i just replaced alt belt & had similar
noise thought it was bad tensioner.after using long screw driver to see where noise was it was a/c clutch when a/c is off(clutch not engaged)

Do some sluething and be sure. Otherwise the bearing is normally part of the clutch assembly.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement

Well I found the location of the noise. The clutch on the compressor is shot. Its rubbing and that's what is making the noise. I pulled the fuse so it wouldn't click on and I'll get it replaced in the spring. It is in a bitch of a spot too.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement

They have a good tendancy of crapping out when they haven't been turning for a while, completely forgot to mention that.

Re: A/C Compressor Replacement

Good to know. Yeah, I don't use it much, helps save gas. Plus having the windows down allows me to hear the motor better
