oil problem

ever since i got my 92 town car this summer i noticed that it keep loosing oil. i don't think it is burning it off there is no smell of oil in the exhaust and no smoke either. i have also noticed that there is not a oil spot in the driveway. since my last oil change about 1600 miles ago i have had to add about 1.75 quarts of oil to it. there is no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil. i put in castrol sytnec 10w-30. do you think putting in a slightly heavier oil like 10w-40 and then adding lucas oil would help. and i think i am going to use castrol gtx high mileage oil for the next oil change. the car has 121,600 miles on it.

Re: oil problem

These engines are well known for bad valve seals. I have found that the lucas motor oil treatment helps alot to cut down on oil loss. I have 3 cars with these engines and use the normal castrol gtx 10w-40 all year round along with a bottle of lucas motor oil treatment. I did try the high mileage castrol and found it's more money with no differance.

Re: oil problem

You change to new umbrella valves seals without pulling the engine. Either use air pressure to hold the valves open and do one cylinder at a time engine on tdc. Be very careful and don't drop anything into the valve opening. Have a small magnet handy if you drop a keeper.
Or you can pull the plugs put some small rope in the hole roll the engine by hand until tight. Then you can change one cylinder at a time.

Re: oil problem

thanks for the info. being a college student, i don't have a lot of time or money. so i decided to just go ahead and put 10-w40 castrol gtx which i had planned on using in my next oil change anyway. and decided to switch out a quart of regular oil with lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer, and the engine runs quieter so far in the 20 miles i have driven it. i have not heard the lifter either like i did before. and when i got under the car to change the oil I noticed quite a bit of fresh oil and dirt build up around the side and mostly the back edges of the oil pan. so that leads me to think the seal around the oil pan is where it is leaking from when i am driving. so now i just have to wait and see if it still wants to leak with that lucas oil in there.

Re: oil problem

Check the gasket between the block and the casting that the filter and oil sender mount to. The gasket fails and leaks oil that blows back on the back of the engine and trans.
