The Impala is an excellent choice with a 2.4L and the 2.8L that I consider one of the best engines GM has ever produced and I seen many with over 150K and still going strong.

The 2000 Impala engine choices were 3.4 and 3.8 L . There are problems with the 3.4s with the intake manifold gasket leaking. Most were replaced as the problem manifested itself roughly between 60,000 to 130,000 miles. GM came out with a revised gasket to "fix" the problem in the Summer of 2002. Check to see if the gasket was repaired before buying any vehicle with a 3.4 from this era. Telltale signs of the leak are a tannish-mayonnaise like substance under the oil filler cap, and the coolant in the overflow tank constantly needs to be replenished.

Overall they are good cars and I see plenty of them used as police cars, taxis, and rental vehicles.
