2001 Ford Explorer-Shaking at 3,700rpm in Neutral
Hi Everyone,
I just changed the oil for the first time to my 2001 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC V6 ,which I bought six months ago. I accidently ran the engine to about 3,700 rpm when car was in Neutral and found the engine had a big shake. Am I not supposed to do like that? or my car really has some problems? I am totally new about car maintenance. Pls help! Btw, driving on the highway seems smooth but never ran up over 2500rpm. Ray |

Re: 2001 Ford Explorer-Shaking at 3,700rpm in Neutral
Can't say for sure on your 2001 Explorer, but many newer cars have an overrev limiter to prevent you from over-revving your engine when in park or neutral. Often, that limiter is around 3000-3500 rpms. I'd suspect you hit the rev limiter.
When the limiter kicks in, it shuts off fuel to cylinders so it feels the same as a misfire. -Rod |

Re: 2001 Ford Explorer-Shaking at 3,700rpm in Neutral
Correct shorod. The PCM shuts the fuel off and on to keep form damaging the engine during an overrevving condition. So, just try not to do it.
