Crazy rear end noise!! HELP!!

I've got a 96 2d 4x4 tahoe and the rear end started making some crazy grinding noises. It only happens when I let off the gas, but it's loud. Any help on what it could be and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated... thanks

Re: Crazy rear end noise!! HELP!!

Any vibrations that go along with it???

I had a crazy vibration and noise after replacing brake drums and U-joints at anything over 65mph and it ended up being the new drums were not perfectly round and off balance. The only way I found this out was to run it while sitting on jack stands with the tires and drums off. With something like this, do the same thing and see if you can pinpoint it while running in the air. obviously make sure you stay safe as this can be a very hazardous practice.

Is it full of greese or any signs of leaking?
If it only does it on coast it does sound like rear end problem.
Here is a link that may help.

Have you checked the front pinion bearing or carrier bearings for being lose or bad?
