95 transport engine stalls

My transport has been acting up. Going down the road and the engine will die stall once in a while. Put it into neutral and it will start right up. Well then yesterday the better half went to the store and when she went to start it (after shopping) it would not start. So I when over with the car trailer and the darn thing started. Brought the van home and try to get the van to do it again and wouldn't. Any ideas would be great.

Re: 95 transport engine stalls

THis can be typical of 3.8 crank position sensor failure.....a heat sensitive component, and this condition worsens with time. Generally happens once engine is warm and lacks ram air cooling: car is stopped at a red light or parked at the supermarket after ride from home.... so the way you describe it is not totally convincing of this at least for now.

but what engine type, again? (I suggest you update your profile mentioning engine type)

The engine is the the 3800. What does it take to replace the crank sensor? Would I need a special tools?

Re: 95 transport engine stalls

Yes indeed this is a little arduous and that is why I do not jump to conclusions...
However, that is the component I would not like to fail in the middle of nowhere and at that age, the probability of failure really exists.
There are several threads about this...will come back with links...

Now check that thread

for some hints on balancer removal.
