stupid question about painting

Hey guys,

I have a stupid question about painting, hopefully you guys can help.

I have a black coat as base, and then sprayed some light gun metal over top the black to get a look similar to the carbon fiber. My question is, after i've done those two colours, seems to have some orange peel. Will the paint smudge and stuff if i sand/polish it? If so, how can i get the orange peel out without ruining the finish? THanks

Re: stupid question about painting

You can't polish directly on a metallic.

If you want to polish it, you'll need to clear coat and then polish the clear coat.

Re: stupid question about painting

I don't know if you have proceeded yet, but here is my reply.
If the orange peel is bad then it will most likely show in the clear and will be hard to get out. My suggestions: 1. sand the metalic and mist another coat to get rid of the orange peel and leave you with an uniform color. 2. Apply clear more times than you usually would, then sand and polish.
If you are using the second method, then be careful not to sand through the clear and damage the metallic paint underneath.
I normally go with method 1 when I encounter this situation.

HTH,
Steve
