Speedometer noisy.............

1983 S-10 Tahoe 2.8 engine/auto tranny. 53K miles actual on it.

..clicking or dry noise. frequency of the noise is controlled by the engine RPM. It appears to be in the speedo head. I attempted to access and remove the head. Got the dash removed to the part that the speedo is bolted to and took off 2 speed nuts but cannot remove the speedo head or the back dash part that the little lites are in. The gear selector is one thing that is holding me up. If I take the screws out that are holding the speedo in can I pull the speed out far enuff to remove the unit? also a couple of dash lites have come loose and have fallen out the back side. The one I really miss is the bright lites indicator. Is this enuff info to advise me on my next step?
Thanx............

Jack

Squirt some lube down the speedo cable.

Re: Speedometer noisy.............

Whew! Finally got it fixed. Was finally able to remove the speddo head and poured graphite down the cable and then about a foot from the tranny discovered that the cable had a rather sharp bend in it. Straighened that out and now quiet as a church mouse. Thanx to all who responded. Still working on getting the dash out to repl some of the led lites. Auto tranny selector holding me up.
