Fuel Guage goin crazy

My fuel guage goes from empty to full while im driving it,(fluctuates) when I hit the brake pedal it shoots all the way up to full and stays there till im off the brake. This seems to be happenning only when im nearing an empty tank, when its halfway or almost full it doesnt seem to do it. I know its probably a ground but where and why when the brakes are applied????? Thanks for any help.

Re: Fuel Guage goin crazy

I suspect the level sensor in the fuel tank, at least that's what it was on my '97.
It's a potentiometer with 3 tiny metal "wipers" with a rod and a float at the other end. The bushing holding the device together is wobbly and not well supported & the tiny wipers flex until they break off. The replacement have 2 thicker, stronger wipers and the bushing is some improved. I replaced the whole module w/fuel pump as it had been run out of fuel a few times and knew the fuel pump wasn't in the best of shape.

Re: Fuel Guage goin crazy

I don't remember what would make it most active but it was totally unreliable.
