A/C Compressor Noise

My '98 GS w/ 141k mi. developed a moaning, growling sound that I determined was coming from the A/C compressor. The A/C works fine and the noise is the same on or off.
Questions for you:
1. Is the problem more likely to be the clutch bearing or the compressor starting to fail? Is there an easy way to tell?
2. I've heard that the cost to replace a clutch is so high that one should replace the whole compressor on an older car. What do you think?
3. How risky is continuing to drive it? What's the worst that will happen? I'm thinking it may freeze and throw the belts. Anything else come to mind?

Since the noise is there with A/C off it sounds like the clutch. Air gap off or bearing. Have you checked for any metal shavings? Also, are you sure it is not a noisy tensioner or idler pulley including at the supercharger drive belt side?

Thanks for the response.
I took the SC belt off first and the noise was still there. Next removed the main belt and felt the pullys for looseness. One tension idler felt a little loose so I replaced it, but no improvement.
I listened with an improvised "stethiscope" (metal rod & plastic tube). The compressor is definitely noisy, but I can't distinguish the exact location.
The clutch engages & disengages normally and there is no sign of metal, dust, etc.
This would seem to leave the clutch bearing? I'm guessing it's part of the clutch assy.
Any experience to guess how much a repair will cost?

You're welcome. I agree. Cost will vary because the GM dealer or an A/C repair shop will try to convince you to get a whole new compressor which will have the clutch. The clutch bearing can be replaced separately without replacing the compressor. A special tool puller is need to get the clutch pulley off. The air gap can then be adjusted. The compressor is hard to get at and work around but can be removed from the bracket and set aside without disconnecting the refrigerant lines. Just need to jack the passenger side up and remove some plastic splash guards for easier access.

A new GM V5 compressor is very expensive and so can A/C labor. Shops can charge you upwards to $1K or more for the parts and labor.
