2002 Silverado No Start Codes 0171 and 0174

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2002 Silverado, 5.3 130K that began not wanting to run this morning. It will start intermittently after sitting for a while. It is throwing the two codes above , they are lean fuel both banks. I am thinking fuel filter but I wanted to get input before I jumped into things. It acts like it is starving for fuel. The fuel pump is quiet. Thanks in advance for your help! Dave

If it does not start after replacing the fuel filter, you need to test fuel pressure.

Thanks. I'm under the impression that fuel pumps are either bad or good. Am I wrong? If it is the fuel pump, it hasn't quite failed all the way.

Replaced the fuel filter, as I figured, not the problem. Can anyone tell me how to test the fuel pump pressure?

Replace the fuel pump its easy to do and wont take too long to do it. Most likely its the problem since they usually go out at 90K-120K kinda surprised yours hasnt failed yet at 130K. Mine failed at 100K

You need a fuel pressure gauge, available at most parts stores. There is a port on the fuel line just above the passenger side fuel rail. There is a dust cap on it. Connect the gauge there and check the pressure with the engine off (ignition on), engine running cold, engine running warm. Shut engine off and watch for bleed off.

except a fuel pump will cost about $300, that is a lot of money to waste if that is not the problem. Do the Fuel Preasure test first.

Re: 2002 Silverado No Start Codes 0171 and 0174

OK, checked the fuel pressure (actually my dad did with a friends gauge) and he said no fuel pressure. I am trying to determine which fuel pump to buy from rockauto.com but there are many choices, TCU, TCF , evaporative emissions or not, one or two plugs, robust fuel system sender, etc. The truck is a 2002 ext cab, 5.3 litre, purchased in Massachusetts. Can anyone tell me which fuel pump I should be buying without me pulling the pump? I'd like to have it purchased when I get the old one out, and I'd like to buy it online. Thanks! Dave

I'd just go to Napa and buy one, premium and be done with it, they can solve all the questions on type with a production date usually, there are very few variations.

Most people here have had experience with an aftermarket pump and I must say they were not too pleased. It has been recommended to buy the OEM pump from the dealer.

Re: 2002 Silverado No Start Codes 0171 and 0174

X2 definitly go with OEM. It may cost a little more, but it will save you from having to spend more time and money replacing it again. I got mine from O-Reilley's for ~$280.

The only variations they should have at a parts store is with the evap system or without. To determine if you have the evap system, look under your truck in front of the fuel tank. If you see a rectangular black box with fuel lines running into and out of it, that is the evap system and you need the evap pump.

All American based trucks have the evap, federal regs.

Re: 2002 Silverado No Start Codes 0171 and 0174

I had to replace my truck fuel pump like last month and it had like 130k on it. Also 2002.. Anyways, you will have to change the connector on your truck that connects to your fuel pump.

Also I would go to Napa, i look at autozone fuel pump and napa fuel pump and the napa fuelpump look like it had a better built. Plus it's OEM.

If you look for some of my older post it can help you out probably. The fuel tank is plastic soo it's going to be lighter then a metal one. HOw i did was jack up the back of the truck, got under the truck unhook what icould and then lower the fuel tank with a floor jack. Hardest part was the the fuel intake line that comes from the side of the truck,it's a bitch to get it back on.

Re: 2002 Silverado No Start Codes 0171 and 0174

It turned out to be the fuel pump. I ordered the Spectra Premium from Rock Auto, so far so good, quiet and works. It was 155 plus shipping. The only problem is the fuel gauge is a bit off, it runs out with an 1/8 of a tank I think. My wife figured it out as I was working on her Suburban. My truck went 365 miles on that tank. I tried to get one from gmpartsdirect but they were so unresponsive I gave up.
