Possible ground problem need help badly

First off let me say it is a 93 prizm 1.6. The car starts fine but if you have the lights on and give it gas the lights dim and the battery light comes on. The battery light also comes on whenever you give it gas. What I am wanting to know is if it is a ground that could be causing this problem. Any suggestions are greatly appricieated.
