COMPLETE: SPC 60's Contest - Mr Norm's Supercharger Funny Car

Well it took a bit longer than expected, but I took the time to put some nice detail work into the engine.

The body is painted in Testor's Metalflake Red as per the instructions, with the decals that came with the kit (which are made by Slixx). Upon looking around at several pics I have in books, most of the time he ran with the lettering on the slicks turned inward, so I didn't bother to put any on there.

Tires were scuffed with a sanding stick. The side-window openings were also widened, as the box-stock body had ribbing in them that was too thick. The interior tub is box stock as well. The drag chute on the back was detailed with some wire and a safety tag.

Under the body of course is where the car really shines. The chassis was assembled and shot gloss black. Interior is box stock though I plumbed the master cylinder down into the floor. The engine was detailed like a typical Top Fuel Hemi of its time--the magneto was wired, the front-mount fuel pump was plumbed and painted to look like AN fittings were used, with braided hose going up to the two distribution blocks on the back of the injection hat and the back of the blower. From there, black wire was used for fuel lines heading into the lower intake plenum and above the blower. The remote oil filters mounted on the frame were plumbed to the engine block with braided line as well, as was the gas tank.

All in all a fun build--LOTS of little fit and finish problems though, this really IS a difficult kit as the instructions say.

Looks pretty fine John
Fine enough to make me feel like wanting to do one of these things for myself

If you can stand some constructive criticism, there are a couple of things that I think might work well on your next funny car.
1. Those front shocks are very visible when the car is displayed open and the build would benefit IMHO from some scratch built coils (which you are more than capable of doing)
2. My old eyes can't see to well anymore, but it looks like those VERY visible exhaust pipes could be turned into little works of art...
3. You have an airbrush? If yes, kill the kit chrome and buy some Alclad2. If you don't have an AB, forget I spoke

The above is not meant to detract from your build in anyway, it's just some friendly feedback

This is a great model and it turned out nice. I really like the subject matter also. I don't remember from the wip but I hope this is going into your own personal collection. I agree with Klutz about the coils and Alcad but as it is it's still a good looking build of a very interesting funny car. The body is perfect and nice touch with the parachute cord.

Re: COMPLETE: SPC 60's Contest - Mr Norm's Supercharger Funny Car

Yes, thankfully, finally, I have a build I can keep.

klutz those are all very good points--unfortunately I still have not gotten an air brush, because I refuse to cheap out on one, so Alcad is out of question right now. I DID drill out the exhaust pipes and blacken them inside, but of course because I don't have Alcad capabilities I can't give them a really realistic metal finish, or heat colouring, or whatever.

Thanks for the tips though, I think given more time I could've done those things, but the contest is up on November 1st!

Yup, the kit comes supplied with decals for both--Mr. Norm switched from a '69 nose to a '70 nose halfway through the car's run. I went with that one.
