Why is this gear not turning?
94 with an I-6. I was getting no spark so I pulled off the distributor cap. The rotor was not turning, so I pulled out the distributor itself. As someone cranked the engine, I looked down that hole and the gear that drives the distributor is not turning? Will replacing the oil pump cure this?

Re: Why is this gear not turning?
Actually the camshaft is not turning which is why that gear is not turning. "That" gear drives the distributor. I found this out by looking inside the valave train and noticed no movement while cranking. Guess I'll take the timing cover off.

Re: Why is this gear not turning?
From what I found on Autozone.com it looks like you have a set of timing gears in there instead of a chain or belt, probably broke a tooth off of one of the gears or one of the shear pins broke or came out.

Re: Why is this gear not turning?
The problem was that the camshaft timing gear teeth have all broke off. Now I'm wondering if this engine is an interference engine?

Re: Why is this gear not turning?
Not sure if that engine is an interference engine or not.
While you are replacing the gears I would drop the oil pan and clean the debris out of the bottom of the oil pan and make sure that the pickup screen is not full of debris either. Only things I can think of regard that gear is that it either was not heat treated correctly, someone dropped it before they installed it, or the engine had the wrong weight of oil in it. |
