97 Voyager Starter replacement?

Even though I'm a "BrandNew" here I got almost all common voyager problems .
Too many things to try out.
First the starter..I've got 97 voyager SE, 3.0
It just clicks and not cranking and starts after a few tries.
Sometimes works fine at the first try sometimes after 20 more tries.

The battery is good and new and also grounded well.
The (+) cable to the starter is good. But the thin cable(I guess it goes to the Solenoid) looks dirty and not sure it works fine.

What I've done is to disconnect the this cable from connector but couldn't.
I'm not sure if it is just clicked into the socket or any nuts? I tried to full the connector by hand but strongly fixed.

Any advice would be appreciated regarding this problem.

Re: 97 Voyager Starter replacement?

I have the same car except its a 95 voyeger. Began having trouble with the starter so I replaced the relay - didn't fix it. Finally replaced the starter with one from the junkyard, $40. No problems since, its held on with 3 bolts.

I think the oil leak killed my old one.

Re: 97 Voyager Starter replacement?

Thanks Robert.
I'll go and get one from a junkyard.

A simple qyestion.
Is the thin cable simply pluged into the socket? I see the thick(+) cable is tightened with a small bolt. and I can see only 2 bolts holding the starter.
95 and 97 are different?

Re: 97 Voyager Starter replacement?

The clicking is usually caused by some worn out contacts in the starter - which shouldn't cost more than $10-$12. The denso starters in these cars rarely fail for any other reason. I replaced the contacts in my 98 Grand Caravan - pretty straightforward job. There are several sites which illustrate how to replace the contacts, such as http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/starter/.

I even have a few extra contacts which I can sell, if you're interested. Good luck.

Re: 97 Voyager Starter replacement?

Thanks vgv14.
It was a contacts that causes the click sound.
Hard to buy only a contact since most part store sell a whole starter assembly at $200.
I got one from NAPA costs onlt $3(WOW). and the job was quite straitforward and easy enough.
And finally I got fixed the fricking starter clicking probrem.
The old contacts was half way worn out and it might cause the problem.

Now works like a new starter.
Thanks everyone.
