91 regal problems starting

Hi, I have a 91 regal that will start just fine the first few times you start it in a day, but usually at about the 3-4th start of that day it will take a while for the car to start, it will turn over for a couple of seconds before starting. Finally, after the 5-6 start, it wont turn on at all, it will turn over once or twice then click and quit trying, if you keep trying to start it, it will eventually stop trying and just click right away and growl (for lack of a better word) at you. If you let the car sit (sometimes for a couple hours, somtimes all night, depending on how quickly you give up trying to start it when it quit) after it dies, it will start again, somtimes just fine, other times it will turn over for a few seconds before starting. Im fairly sure that something os over heating, because it will work fine after sitting for a while, and because if you look under the hood after it quits starting, you can smell somthing burning, we've already checked the battery and connected another one to it along with the current one and it still wouldent start, so its not a lack of power. I just dont know what it could be, please help.

Welcome to AF

I would bet your starter is shot. They will act up when hot as they first start to go, then progressively get worse until they won't start at all.
