I have a 1998 Explorer. Last night I was told that I had no break lights. Upon checking them out this morning I found this to be true. The thing is the parking and tail lights still work. I tried replacing the bulbs and fuses. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Break lights don't work on 98 explorer
My guess is pedal switch if you checked fuse and bulb. If that's not it, you can check for continuity from the pedal switch to the brake light contact.
When you said no brake light, did you try with the park lights on and off. The reason I ask is that I've seen some funky stuff happen if you have a bad ground. Somethimes you'll see dim brakes with brighter park lights etc. This is due to the current going thru both filaments instead of going back to ground. Denis |

Re: Break lights don't work on 98 explorer
I found the pedal switch. I was able to get it inplugged but I can't figure out how to remove it. It seems like it may have a pin holding it on. But i didn't want to pull on it too much.
Also, I went to ford direct online to try to find the part. They list no such part. Is there another more technical name for it? Thanks again. |

Brake light switch, stop light switch, Brake Off/On switch. You can find these switches at your local aftermarket auto parts stores.
Here is a place that has the switch.

Yes thats the part. I was able to remove it. I'll be picking a new one up tomorrow. Hopefully it will fix the problem. I'll post on it either way. Thanks!

Re: Break lights don't work on 98 explorer
I got the switch today. I attempted to put it on but I can't figure out which way it goes on. When I took the old one off a small plastic bushing came off with it. the new one did not have the bushing but I still have the old one. When I put the rod through the hole is the rod supposed to go all the way through or can the pin be inserted in the middle? I can't get the rod to go far enough for the pin to go in on the outside. Aside from being after market, The parts are exactly the same.
Is it possible for one of you to snap a pic of what it's supposed to look like installed? I should have taken one before I got started. Thanks for your help. Last edited by Zom; 10-17-2007 at 09:13 PM. |

Sorry for delay. Click here for a site that has repair information. There is a picture that if you click on it will show how to install.

Make sure the bushing goes back on, I know first hand what happens when you dont use it. It was not pretty.
