WIP: Colin McRae 2001 Ford Focus WRC (Tribute Build)

Hello All:

Here’s my entry for the Burns/McRae/Park tribute build. It’s the Ford Focus driven by McRae in 2001 Monte Carlo Rally. Although he retired from the rally that year, the color scheme of the car really strikes me, and IMO it’s one of the best looking liveries on a Focus.

My original plan was to build the kit box stock, with enhancements from Studio27’s photo-etch set. However the photo-etch has been discontinued for some, so it’s quite difficult to come by. After searching for it in my LHS and online hobby shops with no success, I may just build it box stock yet again. Does anyone know where I can get it?

Here’s my progress so far:

I filled the side vents with putty and then primed the body.

After that, I painted the body with Tamiya’s pure white, masked and painted with Telefonica blue. Not the best masking job as you can see from the pics above, but since those flaws will be covered with decals later anyways, that’s not a major issue.

Comments and criticisms are always welcomed!

Thanks for looking

Very nice so far.I know from experience that the masking can be a real pain on the various Ford Focus models, but yours looks very good. You may have a problem finding the S27 photo etch set.I tried all my usual sources to see if I could find one for you but drew a blank.Maybe someone on the forums may know where you can find one.

Re: WIP: Colin McRae 2001 Ford Focus WRC (Tribute Build)

Sorry for digging this ancient thread out. The reason for sidelining this project is that problems occured while clearcoating the body. As you can see below, some of the areas painted with TS-51 flowed, ruining the Pirelli decal on the rear right corner. After shelving this project for almost two years, I decided to finish this model up. Here's my progress so far:

I also started detailing the chasis:

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Nice work.
Any problems with the red/pink decals cracking?

Re: WIP: Colin McRae 2001 Ford Focus WRC (Tribute Build)

Chris: Yes the red decals on the roof and front bumper did crack during application as they need more bending to conform to the surfaces. With some filling, the cracks are almost invisible now. Other than that, everything goes on perfectly.

Cheers,

Re: WIP: Colin McRae 2001 Ford Focus WRC (Tribute Build)

Last update for this WIP thread:

Used “Ford” stencil from Renaissance. PE mesh from Crazy Modeler.

Completed front lip

Engine detail

And underside panels

It’s about 98% done now. Just the rear windshield, side mirrors and some minor details (valve stems, pe hood pins) need to be put on.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Nam
