92 Caprice Wagon brakes harder than normal

My husband replaced the power brake booster on my wagon (was hissing and I finally begged him to replace the booster - hissing stopped) and now I have to press down pretty hard on the brakes before it will stop. He says that does not mean they need to be bled - what then? He had a stroke about 3 years ago and is not the same and it is hard because simple things sometimes are hard for him. Overall, he does well but this worries me a little.

Do you have to press harder for the car to stop, or does your foot have to travel further? If the pedal has to travel further, then it's a good possibility that there is air in the lines, or even air in the master cylinder and does need to be bled. If if you have to press harder, but not neccesaraly further, then this brake booster just isn't giving as much "boost" as the old one. I've found that to be the case many times with aftermarket boosters.

Re: 92 Caprice Wagon brakes harder than normal

Thanks for the answer. It is that I have to press harder and that made sense to my husband also. I am driving to Sevierville TN next weekend to meet my husband. He is traveling with a good friend of ours from Lebanon, IN. The muscle car museum there asked our friend to put his pink 71 Challenger in the museum. What a thrill. I am driving the Caprice Wagon myself from Indy to TN and I guess I just wanted someone else's opinion. Thanks again. By the way - to see our friends car go to our website (just a personal website but it has some of our cars on it) www.garryandconniestanifer.com
