No power in ignition

I turned the ignition switch to start my 1995 Grand Am and heard a click and then nothing. Battery tested good. There is no power to anything, no lights no nothing.
BUT
A test light grounded to the battery and touched anywhere to metal lights up. Manafold body or anywhere metal is.
Any suggestions?

Re: No power in ignition

You cannot use a test light to check a battery.. You need a voltmeter. A test light can light up at even 10 volts, which is not enough push to get current to the starter

Re: No power in ignition

The battery was tested with a battery and placing a load on it, tester not the test light.

By grounding the test light to the battery -- terminal and placing the probe end on any metal the light comes on although not as bright as it is connected directly to the + terminal on the battery.

Re: No power in ignition

So you are saying that when you clamp the test light to the positive battery terminal and touch the probe to metal, you light up ?

Re: No power in ignition

No test light connected to the negitive battery post. The clip part.

Probe the sharp end touched to any metal the light will light up.

It is like a negitive ground system. I know it sounds strange.

Re: No power in ignition

Nope battery cables didn't reverse themselves in the time I turned it off and the time I tried to start it.

There was a recall on the switches and the switch was changed by the pontiac place a couple of years ago.

Re: No power in ignition

IDK about any recalls.....

But have you checked your terminals at the battery and starter ??

Another thing, check the ignition fuse.
Also thiers 3-4 fuseable links in the starting system.

See this link for a wire diagram...

Good Luck and Welcome to AF!

Re: No power in ignition

Problem has been solved. The battery although showed a charge even under load was bad.
It had a short in it. (the battery)

New battery was placed in car and now works well. Thanks for the help.
