I just recently had to replace the engine in my wifes 99 Contour SE Manufacture date 10/98. It's a 2.0 with all the goodies. Before installing engine we replaced the timing belt as preventive maintenance. Now after only about 250-300 miles it has shredded the new timing belt. Is it it possible the tensioner could be bad? When the belt was installed everything appared ok. By the way the new engine came from Greenleaf with supposdily about 35K on it. any suggestions what specifically to look for when we put the new belt on? Thanks in advance for any advice, info.

More than likely the tensioner froze up on it. If you've got a long straight edge check all the pullies to see if they are even with each other. You can get a tensioner kit that comes with a belt for about $55.
Also, check the water pump pulley to see if it turns freely.

Thanks for the info, Hope fully the waterpump is ok it was put on brand new also. I forgot to post that. Of course anytheing is possible, the tensioner is kinda what I had thought but it's good to know hopefully I'm on the right track. I will put a straight edge on the pulleys once we get it back down. Thanks.
