timing gear cover

wondering if you need to have timing gear cover or if it is optional also how to replace ignition switch on 87 jetta do you need to take off the whole sterring wheel?

The timing belt can be damaged by oil or other engine fluids. It can be too big a problem if it breaks not to protect it. You will want to remove the steering wheel when you replace the ignition switch. It's too hard to get to otherwise.
