Fluid check

Ok I am fairly new to 4X4's. I have a 93 GMC Jimmy 4.3l V6. When and how how often should I change the front and rear diff and transfer case fluid. Should I spend the extra and use synthetic? This veh does not see much off road use and is fairly stock. It's mainly a daily driver. I'm taking the truck in to have the tranny flushed anyway is it worth the extra $$$ to just have them do all the fluids at once or can I change the diffs and transfer oil myself fairly easily?

Re: Fluid check

DO NOT get the transmission flushed. Change the fluid, filter, and gasket only. Transmission, differential and transfer case fluids, (under normal operating conditions), should be changed approximately every 36,000 miles. Synthetic fluids are not necessary. Front differential and transfer case have drain plugs. The cover on the rear differential must be removed to drain the fluid, and a new gasket is necessary.

Re: Fluid check

As Old Master says no transmission flushing.
But on rear ends if you go synthetic greese they should be flushed if changing over.

Another note on transmission fluid Dexron 111 is no longer being made.
Dexron 6 is the replacement fluid now.
Beware of multi purpose or fit all fluids.
Ford Mercon and Dexron 3 is now Dexron 6

A lot of parts places and even some so called Ford techs/dealers.
Are saying to use Multi purpose or Mercon V or other stuff..
Doing so may mess up you transmission.

Ford Mercon was fazed out to Mercon/Dexron 3 several years ago.
Now Dexron 3 has been fazed out.

The only approved replacement for Mercon or Dexron 3 is Mercon 6.

All DEXRONŽ-III licenses expired at the end of 2006 and will not be renewed. That's why you're seeing multi-use fluid.
Beyond that date GM will only support the use of DEXRONŽ-VI fluids for use in Hydra-Matic transmissions. Fluids sold in the market after that date bearing claims such as “suitable for use in DEXRONŽ-III applications” or similar wording should be avoided. DEXRONŽ-VI licensed fluids are fully backward compatible and can be used in all applications covered by earlier GM ATF specifications. The use of unlicensed fluids and/or non GM approved aftermarket additives may prove detrimental to transmission performance and void warranty coverage.
