1984 F-150 will not start

When I turn the key the engine does not turn over, just makes a clicking noise once then nothing else. First I thought it was the battery, but lights, radio, blower, everything else works fine. Tried a jump start but did not work, had to get a bunch of people to push me to get it started. Drove straight home, about a 10 minute drive. Got home, parked it, shut it off, immediatly went to start it again just to see but still just got the click. I don't know a whole lot about cars but I think the problem is in the starter or solenoid. Can anybody who knows more than me confirm or deny this? Haven't had a chance to check voltage yet as I work nights I I just got home not too long ago and its 1 am now.

Re: 1984 F-150 will not start

I'd check a few things first. Starters need a SOLID connection to the battery, if it's fuzzy or corroded you can't push the volts or amps needed to fire the starter, they are a pig on electrons. Start by inspecting the battery terminals, take the ends off, scrub the rust\junk off them, hit them with brake cleaner to break down any grease on there and then re-attach them securely. If it still won't fire find the starter and do the same with the leads attaching to it. If it STILL won't fire it is most likely the solenoid\starter assembly, pull it out and bring it to autozone or something similar and they'll test it for you, if it fails replace and rock on.
