proper valve tension
im having a problem with one of my valves. one of them is making a knocking noise. i have not had the time to rip the valve covers to see which one is the one thats making the noise. what would be the proper tension on the valves?, since i dont want to overtighten the valves. 87 4.3L V6

SLOWLY tighten the rocker stud nut until it stops tapping, then in 1/8 turn increments, tighten 1/2 turn further. The engine will stumble while you make the 1/8 turn increments - no worry, it will smooth out - let it smooth out before making another incremental turn. Yes, you will get oil everywhere so make sure not to do this on a hot engine - and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Re: proper valve tension
I use aluminum foil as a "drip pan" when I adjust valves. Just rip off a long piece, scrunch it so it sits on the lip of the cylinder head. Use cardboard beyond that if you wish, just keep it off hot surfaces and work fast.
