Yes this is possible. Most, if not all fuel filters are designed with a uni-directional flow. Some, not all, filters have the direction of flow stamped into the filter.

If you are asking about the fuel filter for your '99 350, there is no way you can install the filter backwards. The filter has different flanges on each end.

I belive you can install the fuel filter backwards most filters from auto parts stores have a IN and OUT stamped on them
