2004 Envoy XL Oil change

Hello, getting ready to change oil in my Envoy, 6cyl. for the first time. Since it is out of factory warranty I will start doing this myself. I change oil in my other vehicles so I am familiar with the basics. I looked underneath and it looks like I will have to remove the skidplate to get at the drainplug and filter. Is that correct? Where are the plug and filter located? Owners manual says 7qts., wow! Is that correct also. Thanks for any tips or pointers. Guy

Re: 2004 Envoy XL Oil change

GM put a small access door right below the drain plug. There's a single screw you turn to open the door. In my experience, it has been a better all-around job to just take the time to remove the 4 bolts holding that whole plastic cover on there. You can get to the drain plug and filter easier, and there's not as much mess. As for the oil fill, i would start with 6 quarts.

7 qts for the 4.2 is the exact fill.

Correct. That's with a new filter.
