Question about Speed.

What is the top speed of a V8 305 Caprice? 1991 is the year of the vehicle.

Not enough info. Top speed under what considerations? Why do you want to know?

The 305 has achieved 120MPH in police use (9C1 police package), and probably in civilian use as well. I took my boxy 88 up to a little over 100 with the original 305. I once got a ticket by the California Highway Patrol in that version of my car for going 84 MPH (and there was still more power available from the engine).

Top speed is not really the issue - time is. I have no doubt that a properly-tuned and maintained 305 can hit the same speed as a 350 - at least on level ground - but you're talking 5 minutes versus 1 minute to achieve that speed, 305 vs 350.

That's where the 350 outshines the 305. With the 305 under the hood of my car, I learned to develop a good deal of patience with driving it. The 350 made it actually fun to drive. If I was the cop who drove that thing during its service, it'd be OK to drive around on patrols and such, but God help me if I needed to catch someone.

One nice thing about the 305 though - with it, my car averaged about 25MPG on the highway. Now, I'm lucky to get 20. That's the price I pay for performance though.

I thought the speedo of a 91 305 read like max of 80mph or was it 100 mph?

How much would it cost to swap in a 350 and what would i have to change?

And are caprice able to do donuts? I just want a caprice i could have as much fun in as people do in camaros

Re: Question about Speed.

I can certainly do donuts in my car if I wish - but tires are expensive!

You can swap for a 350 and about the only thing you'd have to do is reprogram/replace the PROM on your ECM.

Do you know how much that might be with the Prom/ecm price included.I read i could find a 350 motor for $300-$700.
What about the dash? Could i change the dash into the same as Impala SS and have everything working right?

I would buy a 5.7 or one with 350 already but i am only looking to spend 1000 or 1300 at most at the start

You can buy my 95, but I cant let it go for anything close to $1300. If I were you, I would just buy another caprice instead of going through the hassle of getting a new engine installed. Also, I think the tranny makes a difference too but I'm not a mechanic nor do I know alot about cars. I can only look at symptoms and guesstimate the problem (I have gotten better with my guesstimations lol)

you wont really be saving much. It will be at least $1000 including the engine and labor unless you have a good mechanic that doesnt charge much. I would sell my old one and just buy a new one. That is what I plan on doing. I want to sell my 9c1 LT1 and get a B4C LS1 or I may just keep it and still buy a LS1.

I rather pay 1g instead of 5gs and still have to put work into a car. 1g and no work mechanicly > 5gs and work to get it running.

lol. Of course I wont get 5000 for my car without it running. That is why its in the shop now. Once I get this done and if I decide to keep it, I wont have to put anymore work into it. I have already done the following so there is not much more that can go wrong (everything is new of course):

water pump, thermostat
radiator
plugs/wires

completely new front end (if you get a 9c1 expect to get this done)
bushings, arms, tie rods, center link, and everything else

filters
tranny serviced
rear upper control arms
tips and mufflers (came of the line with factory true duals)
starter
flywheel (flexplate)
throttle body cleaned

I know thats not all I have done but all I can remember right now. When I first bought it in june, it only had 103K miles. I immediatly drove it from NJ to Oklahoma, then to Mississippi (over 3000 miles) with no problems other than the radiator busted. I have put 5000+ miles on it in 4 months with no major problems except the flywheel.

Plus it has almost new GM goodwrench engine/tranny, everything works, etc. It has also been put on a diagnostics machine. If I were to keep it I know I can get at least another 300k miles out of it. Try getting over 200k from a ford lol. Found On Road Daily??? Should be found on the side of the road daily ha!

Also, if you want one with 180K or more miles, my friend has a 93 9C1 LT1 with candy green paint (looks like a giant jolly rancher) that he is trying to sell. He just put a new tranny in it.

I have done a 360 (with the big police tires) in mine but not on purpose. I probably would have done a 720 up a tree if it werent for the big tires. i will never hit the gas that hard on a turn again. It scared the sh*t out of me lol. I have burnt up 3 tires in 4 months. Thank god for used tires!!!

$2900 for a 92? lol Dont pull up next to a 94-96 in that thing unless you want to get dusted. I wouldn't even pull up to another 93 in that thing. And no, mine doesnt really need painting, just a good detailing. Paint is in about the same condition as the 92. A good buffing should do the job. My friend with the candy 93 tried his luck and of course i left him. That was before I got wires/plugs/filters/etc and I can tell that its way faster after I got that done.

I had a 305 in my Caprice and it took a little more effort than a lighter car such as a Camaro or Trans Am, but I was able to rip a couple of dry-pavement doughnuts and power slides back in my highschool days. But as Silicon said, tires soon became expensive. I was known well throughout my highschool for my burnouts though like this one I have posted on YouTube: Caprice Classic Burnout. This is just before swapping to a 350 and a new transmission. The transmission, thanks to a long time misaligned TV cable and years of abuse, was beginning to slip pretty badly and thats why it had a little bit of a rough time getting going at first, but when it was younger it's light up that tire effortlessly.
