95 neon brake lights are not working

im having a problem with my brake lights, they arent working, the lights work when i have the headlights on! ive checked all fuses and they seem fine! could it be the switch thats attached to the brake petal? and if so does anyone know how much it would cost to replace? any help would be appreciated!

Re: 95 neon brake lights are not working

Are you saying the brake lights and the running lights work when the headlamps are on? Or that there are lights at the back end of the car when the headlamps are on, but not the brakes? Those could be the usual running lights. The brake lights are a separate circuit - though they use the same bulbs (dual filaments). The brake light switch is a possibility, but they generally seem reliable. I would suspect both brake lamp bulbs being burned out or sockets corroded, before I would suspect the brake light switch. (The tail-lights on Neons may see water getting in during heavy rain.)
If the tailights are 'on' when the headlamps are on, but go 'out' when you step on the brake, then you have a bad ground wire somewhere.
The other place the brake light circuits run is up into the steering column, where the turn signals switch is, and from there back down the column and to the rear of the car. If the center mounted 'third' brake light comes on, but the main brake lights do not -then I think problem with the turn signal switch (or the connectors feeding to it) is a possibility.
A brake lamp switch (or stop lamp switch) would be about $20 u.s.d.
