Thumbs up Fun in the rain...VR4 vs GT

So i'm on my way home from a hard days work (Ha!), driving down the highway, left lane, 80-90 mph, as usual. It's dark and raining, kind of a depressing evening. Up ahead I see a 99-04 GT in the middle lane, think nothing of it, and continue on. As I get closer I see it's lowered, has an exhaust, looked like a Cobra to me, but it was too dark and rainy for me to go and say it was. Still I think nothing of it, as its raining, and what type of idiot races in the rain?

I keep going, about 10 seconds later I see Mustang lights weaving between traffic in my rearview. Fast forward a few more seconds and he's gunning it past me at 100 mph or so. So I drop it in 3rd and catch up, put it back in 4th and wait to see if he'll make a move. My windows were opened just a crack which was just enough to hear that deep gasp for air that a cold air intake makes when he downshifted and floored it. Side by side doing 90 already, I decide i'll just leave it low in 4th and gun it.

From about 3-4k rpm I start inching on him as the boost builds...then there was a car in his lane he had to go around. I played fair and let off until he was past it, then back to the floor with the gas pedal. Inching and inching I pull ahead, finally, after what seemed like an eternity, boost builds and I pull a carlength. By the time I shifted into 5th I had ~3 cars on him. I look back and see he pulled in behind me due to traffic up ahead in his lane, so I start to let off, which gains him 2 cars or so. Seeing that he still wanted more carlengths added to his loss, I oblige. I punch it again, since there's straight highway ahead of us for at least another 3/4 miles. I proceded to put a total of 6-7 carlengths on him. When I glanced down at the speedo it read "145". About 3 seconds later I let off and hit the brakes as there was a curve ahead and i'm not curving at 150+ mph (whatever the top of 5th gear on my 6-speed is) in the rain.

I slow back to 80 or so to try and give a thumbs up, but he slows waaay down and won't come even with me. Oh well, all I can say is I love my tires (The 3800 lb. awd car doesn't hurt either ) So that was my one highway run for the year.

Thanks capt'n O. When is 145 on the highway ever really "smart"? It's fun in the rain, not earning my masters degree in the rain...now that would be smart. Probably the last time I go that fast with wet pavement...probably...

I always tend to find it odd that we discuss safety in a street racing forum.

Looks like you had yourself some fun, and a good kill.

AWD rain racing FTW, the Gt was trying to race in the rain as RWD? Thats the intellectual 1. Good Kill.

Re: Fun in the rain...VR4 vs GT

be carefull buddy, it is funny we speak about safety in this forum but safety is first and evn when street racing, we need to be carefull and not do things to add on to the danger were already doing
i wouldnt do it....and that says alot, cause there's a lot of things i would do. but water to rubber is a unpredictable accident. let alone at 145mph

ppl are gonna do what they're gonna do,, so plz just don't put other ppl in jeopardy (passangers or other vehicles on the road) when you do it. i think as long as you don't race in an ice storm you'll be str8.

Re: Fun in the rain...VR4 vs GT

yup safety first...that includes you're car being able to handle the speed. not some souped up honda with the limiter removed and a better engine. the car wasnt built for speed...tho this is an exception( the vr4 and gt)

Out of the most rampant curiosity...

Is it that much harder to type out "straight" as opposed to "str8"?

Same with "people" over "ppl"?

Re: Fun in the rain...VR4 vs GT

hooray for 145

I think I'll take her out for one last run at 150 on an empty road before she goes away for the winter
