95 Monte Carlo Help!!!

I have 1995 Z34 Monte Carlo , and I have a broken wire on this part next to the engine but I cant figure out what the heck it is... IF anyone can help me please help!!!! I have pics of the part so that you can see what im talking about..!!!! If you open the hood its on the top right hand side of the motor...but seems to be attched to the motor!! there are like 3 lil things that look like phot film cases and the wire sticks right down the middle of them..looks like if you took three C batteries and stood them up together..thats the best I can describe it... ....UPDATE!!! HERE ARE SOME PICS!!

Re: 95 Monte Carlo Help!!!

This crappy Haynes manual, Chiltons were better, does not have a good pic with emission control descriptions of the 3.4 DOHC, but for the 3.1 and 3.8 that's the location of the Digital EGR valve. That really doesn't look like the EGR, but that's the closest thing I can come up with so far. If you can remove it, do so and take it down to a Napa auto parts store if there are any in your area and they can most likely help you figure it out.

Is the check engine light on now? Do you have any codes a a result of the boken wire?

Re: 95 Monte Carlo Help!!!

EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculatory valve. It sends some of the warm exhaust air back into the air intake to lower nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaust.

It is important. The codes can be pulled, well some can, without a special device. I'll figure out on that car how to do it in a little while for you. Gotta run now.

Re: 95 Monte Carlo Help!!!

Oh ok.... Well how important is it?? It has nto seem to have any negative effects on my engine...or the way it runs so far...But i guess its just the wire so I can probly just get a new connector and slice it...

Re: 95 Monte Carlo Help!!!

Well I was thinking about my carbureted vehicles where it really helps. It helps to reduce carb ice. On a fuel injected vehicle it will likely only reduce NO2 emissions. It will also be required for inspection if you have emissions inspection where you live.

If the wire ends are exposed I would just connect them back together. Either by soldering or using a butt connector. I kinda figured the wire broke off inside the valve housing.

Re: 95 Monte Carlo Help!!!

The EGR valve is basically just for emissions... i had to clean the EGR valve on my 95 monte carlo z34 just last week. one of the butterfly valves was sticking, my check engine light went on, i took it to autozone and they read the code for me, and i just clleaned the valve, carbon fell right out of it! haha. Anyway if your wire is broken, either wirenut them back together, splice them together, or if you can't do that beacsue the wire is too short on the connection end, go to a junk yard, get a new connector with like 8 inches of wire on it and splice them together!.

hope that helps!

I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY EGR ON MY 95 Z34, AND I TOOK IT APART BUT DID NOT SEE ANY BUTTERFLY VAVLES. IT HAS WHAT LOOKS LIKE 3 BULLET SHAPED CONES WITH SPRINGS ON THE BOTTOM, SO I TRYED TO LOSEN THEM UP WITH SOME CARB CLEANER, AND I GOT ONE OF THEM TO SPIN ON ITS SHAFT BUT THE OTHER 2 WOULD NOT BUDGE. NOT SURE IF THATS WHATS CAUSING MY PROBLEM ARE NOT. BUT I GOT THE EGR CODE, AND ALSO NOW THE CAR DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE OFF, IT WAS SPUTTERING BEFORE, BUT AT LEAST IT WOULD GO, NOW IT JUST SLOWLY TAKES OFF, AND SEEMS TO OVER REV A BIT AND SHIFT HARD. DID NOT KNOW IF THE EGR WAS CAUSING THE O2 SENSERS TO FOUL UP. PLUGS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE BURNING LEAN, THEY ARE WHITE, AND THE COMPUTER SHOWED THAT IT WAS SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH FROM LEAN TO RICH CONSTANT. TRYED TO GET MY HAND ON THE ONE O2 SENSOR THAT I COULD FIND, BUT COULD NOT REACH IT, UNLESS I HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING APART TO GET TO IT. ITS THE ONE IN THE BACK OF THE MOTOR ABOUT MIDWAY FROM BOTTOM TO TOP.

All 3 valves should move freely if you take a pen and push in on them. If they arn't, then it needs to be cleaned.

as for the O2 sensor, yes they are way in the back. I believe it was very hard to get my hand back there to get it off and put back on!

good luck, I'd make sure the EGR valve is good, make sure you can push all 3 valves in.... if they are stuck, it won't run right.
